The absolutely disgraceful and shameful performance of Trump at the Helsinki post-summit press conference, standing next to and fawning over his idol Putin and witnessed by the whole world, while shocking and probably a new low for his international performance, is hardly surprising. Ditto for his shameful attempts to tear apart our NATO alliances, all to the delight of the Kremlin. This is absolutely who Donald Trump is and how Donald Trump thinks and operates! It is all about Trump first, not America first, it has been that way forever, and will continue that way as long as he is in office. And we have no idea how much damage Trump may have done to our national security in his reckless 2 hour private one on one meeting with Putin, which was all Trump’s idea, and in which we will never know what transpired. Trump reportedly was pleased with his own performance and furious that there was so much negative reaction against it from the press (including Fox!) and his own party.  And his next day attempt to walk back what he said (under obvious duress) was pathetic and absurd. It is certainly gratifying to FINALLY see a significant number (though still a minority) of congressional and other Republicans (even Newt Gingrich!) speak up to contradict and occasionally condemn what Trump said, although neither speaker Ryan nor leader McConnell had the guts to even mention Trump by name, and there is still a lot of silence and vacillation out there, as well as some verbal supporters of Trump's behavior. Will congress actually do anything meaningful to back up their dissatisfaction with this issue? My bet is a resounding NO! I doubt that they will even do anything symbolic such as pass resolutions to support the intelligence agencies. It will be interesting to see whether Trump’s popularity among Republicans, many of whom are presumably not fans of Russia, will take a significant hit over this issue. Given the last couple of years, I doubt it. And the highly disturbing fact remains that Trump has reportedly never ordered his own security agencies to counteract Russia’s continued, current and future cyberattacks against our elections and other institutions! I think that within a week we will have moved on to other issues, and this will just be added to the growing Trump junk pile of outrageous behavior which a few years ago no one could have ever imagined coming from a POTUS!  I think now would be a good time for Mueller to issue a subpoena for Trump’s testimony, and I also hope we get more indictments of campaign officials soon!
