Impartial Justice??? What Bullshit!
As the senate impeachment trial is about to start, the absurdity of the verbal and written oath taken by every senator to render impartial justice in the trial has been on full display for weeks. It should be obvious to everyone that this is all just political theater and gamesmanship, with a clearly predetermined outcome of acquittal. McConnell’s statements that he has been working in close coordination with the White House and that he will make sure Trump is acquitted should be enough to confirm that the trial is totally rigged before it starts, and only highlights the hypocrisy of senators actually swearing an oath of impartiality, so help them God! Of course that probably also applies to most of the Democrats who have already decided to vote for conviction, but it is the Republicans, particularly McConnell, who have rigged the trial rules to make it extremely difficult to even call any witnesses and obtain documents which were all blocked by Trump from the House. Now we find out that McConnell’s proposed rules, which will probably be adopted, mandates 12 hour long sessions for presenting each side, probably partly designed to decrease public viewing of late night sessions and also to exhaust the senators as well as the House managers. Trump’s and McConnell‘s goal is also to have the trial done by the state of the union speech on February 4 so Trump can gloat about it. Although the outcome is all but certain, at least vulnerable and potentially vulnerable Republican senators will have to try to walk a fine line between being loyal to Trump and keeping the trial from looking to the public like the sham that it actually is, particularly knowing that a significant majority of the public and even a plurality of Republicans favor including witnesses. Of course every previous impeachment trial has included witnesses, but the Republicans are obviously afraid of what damaging evidence the witnesses requested by the Democrats might provide. The rules even require any potential witnesses to be first deposed in secret and then votes taken on whether to admit the evidence and what evidence to admit! It will certainly be a fascinating couple of weeks, but since the end result is known, that is a colossal spoiler. Interestingly, the polls indicate that this whole process will have little effect on the 2020 election!
