The Picture of Dorian Trump

Hard to believe that this is actually starting to feel rather monotonous! More White House chaos, with another cabinet secretary tweeted out and a totally unqualified nominee to replace him, more of the seemingly unending Trump sex scandal, and more tantalizing nuggets leaking out on Russian collusion. Meanwhile, Trump just keeps stumbling along, lying to the public whenever it suits him, which is most of the time, pretending that everything is going according to his plan and is just wonderful. And I still find it amazing that his rabid base still eats up all that garbage! A group of Republican women Trump supporters in Texas recently interviewed on CNN reportedly felt that Trump was ordained by God to become president, and therefore must now be a good man despite whatever he did in the past (although they still do not believe he had the affairs he is accused of and denies)! I couldn’t help but think of the Stepford wives when I saw that interview, but these women are actually real. What an amazing thing the power of faith is, no matter how blind or irrational! Donald Trump has actually been incorporated into these people’s religious (some might say cult) belief system! Just imagine votive statues of Saint Donald popping up in red states! At the same time lots of these people are willing to give him a pass for anything bad he says or does, saying they didn’t elect him to be a moral role model, just to push their social and economic agenda. It reminds me of The Picture of Dorian Gray, except that in Trump’s case, his disgusting, corrupt, dishonest, egomaniacal, power-hungry, misogynistic, bigoted, insecure and incompetent real image is only hidden under a sheet in the attic for his true believers, despite being on nauseatingly full display to the rest of us!
