I Am So Damn Sick Of This!!

It has been a while since my last blog, partly due to weeks of traveling most of the time and unfortunately partly due to a combination of a sense of futility and sheer exhaustion by the non-stop reality horror show circus that is the Trump administration! The steady stream of scandals, outrageous comments, insults, lies, flip-flops, assaults on our democratic institutions and allies, awful policies, etc. is just staggering, and after a while you just get numb to things that in any other administration would be absolutely explosive. No matter how jaw-dropping Trump is with his deplorable actions, tweets and comments, it is really just more of the same old bullshit from a narcissistic, profoundly insecure, egomaniacal, sociopathic, totally dishonest, xenophobic, bigoted, racist, misogynistic, cowardly bully, and even when he hits new lows, it’s really not a surprise to anyone. So I find it hard to stay motivated and to come up with anything new or interesting to say about the ever accumulating pile of stinking garbage which is the Trump presidency. The same holds for the sycophant Republicans who defend and enable almost everything this monster says and does, even though many of them probably privately detest him and previously ridiculed him during the 2016 primary (such as that slimy chameleon Lindsey Graham). Trump’s statements and actions over the last few days have been particularly confused and contradictory (e.g. on new tax cuts and increased gun background checks) and particularly offensive in terms of his comments about Jews voting for Democrats being either ignorant or disloyal to other Jews and Israel (while of course hypocritically still criticizing congresswoman Omar for making comments about dual loyalty of American Jews!). And then there is Trump’s dedicated base, i.e. cult members, who by and large would probably still support him even if he did literally go out on Fifth Avenue and shoot someone! TV interviews of some of these people really make me wonder how we can possibly coexist in the same country! I believe most of these people, including the evangelical hypocrites, would continue to support Trump even if he is impeached, if the economy tanks, if he declared war on Denmark and annexed Greenland, or if he replaced Pence with Vladimir Putin as his running mate. Trump is their personal representative and fearless leader in the culture wars, and they don’t care how dishonest, corrupt or perverted he is as long as they can convince themselves that he is really on their side, and obviously these people are capable of self delusion to any degree necessary for that! I don’t believe that his base alone can successfully reelect him (which is Trump’s gambit), and 2020 will come down to a relatively small percentage of independents, conservative Democrats and other swing voters in a handful of swing states, as well as voter turnout in those states. Although Joe Biden is still far ahead in the pack of Democratic candidates and also beats Trump by the highest margin in current polls, largely because he is perceived as the most electable because of his moderate positions, I have major concerns about his performance in a general election campaign against Trump. I think he is clearly past his prime and could easily be made to look foolish and not up to the task, even though he would be infinitely better than Trump. Sometimes I feel like I would just like to hibernate and have someone wake me up when it’s all over! It remains to be seen how much more I can motivate myself to continue posting here, especially in the near total absence of any reader comments.
