Swamp Wars
Control of probably the largest swamp in Washington DC, a.k.a. the House of Representatives, is the Democrats’ to lose in the upcoming midterm election. Although everyone on our side is hopeful, nothing is a sure bet at this point, with probably everything coming down to voter enthusiasm and turnout. As if we needed any more reminders of the corruption, western NY representative Chris Collins, Trump’s first congressional supporter, was just indicted for insider trading on what looks like airtight evidence, although he denies everything and is still running for reelection! And to no one’s surprise, a leaked taped discussion at a private fundraiser has Trump servant Devin Nunes stating that it is up to the House Republicans to protect POTUS from the Mueller investigation and possible impeachment (as opposed to being an independent branch of government with oversight of the executive branch per the constitution!). Although the Republicans certainly don’t have a monopoly on corruption, since they are currently in charge of the House, Senate and White House, this should be a winning issue for Democrats in the midterm elections if they play their cards right, including reminding everyone about how Trump was bragging about hiring only the best people and draining the swamp. Instead, we have been subjected to probably the most corrupt, scandal-ridden, incompetent and by far most dishonest administration in modern history! Although it seems that Democratic congressional candidates are reluctant to campaign on possible impeachment, everyone understands that that is certainly the (GOP) elephant in the room! Even if it is premature and possibly imprudent for candidates to talk about impeachment before the Mueller investigation is complete, I think it makes no sense to hold back on loudly denouncing Trump and his administration, as well as his congressional flunkies, in what will largely be a referendum on Trump. Trump and the Republicans are certainly going to rile up their base to maintain their House majority in order protect Trump from impeachment! Although they should certainly also run on substantive issues, Democrats would be foolish to avoid any mention of the obvious, which is probably the biggest motivator of anti-Trump voters.
I am sure this won’t happen, but I have thought for quite a while that it would be great if the Democrats could somehow solicit campaign slogans, ideas and videos from the public.
It is going to be an interesting three months!
