Can the Presidency (and Country) Recover from Trump’s Poisonous Web of Lies?

I admit that this is not new ground, but there haven't been any major bombshells lately, mostly more of the same, and it's getting hard to come up with new material!

Americans can probably be divided into three main categories: those who realize that Trump lies incessantly (with lying defined as not telling the truth, albeit that Trump apparently believes whatever comes out of his mouth), those who do not believe that Trump lies (his hard-core cult-like supporters), and those who really don’t give a damn. Of course, some of those in the first and third categories are also Trump supporters! Much of Trump’s business record, which he relied upon to get elected, was also built on lies. And this pernicious lying has set the tone for and infected the entire administration like a cancer, emanating from spokespeople and appointees, and also extending outside the administrative branch to congressional, media and other supporters. This is compounded by Trump’s relentless attacks on the mainstream media ("the enemy of the people"!!!) when it expresses any criticism of him or his cronies or exposes his lies. Likewise for the pervasive culture of corruption in this administration, which also emanates from Trump himself. Most of us have already gotten used to this unprecedented and outrageous situation, which itself is appalling! But the question is, what happens once Trump is gone, which unfortunately will probably be a matter of years? Will the office of the presidency be permanently damaged domestically and internationally, or will it be able to be restored to its previous, albeit imperfect, traditional state after this abhorrent aberration, which has been aptly described by Carl Bernstein as a malignant presidency? Unfortunately there is no way to predict that at this point, but it would not be surprising if the Trump administration marks a pivotal point in the decline of American democracy (and also of American influence, particularly in Asia). This would parallel the recent erosion of democracy in many areas worldwide. There is also no end in sight for the tribalistic culture wars in this country that have been exposed, exploited and stoked by Trump's campaign and presidency.  For example, I somehow landed on a conservative Tea Party email list, and recently got an email that began: "California to ban the sale of Bibles?", and went downhill from there.  Really??

To quote our glorious leader, Sad!
